Quality Assurance in Higher Education is a global practice now. It has become vital for higher education to be closely aligned with the needs of the community and needs of the graduates to explore their potential in terms of employability and lifelong learning. In order to create scope for employment, the graduates are required to prepare themselves in the context of national as well as global requirements.  Understanding the emerging need of quality in higher education, the government of Bangladesh has taken several notable measures: The Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) is one of such initiative. Under HEQEP, a Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) has been established at UGC in order to expedite the process of establishing quality culture at the universities of our country. Towards targeting the establishment of quality culture at the universities, the Institutional Quality Assurance Cells (IQACs) were established in 69 private and public universities.

The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) has been established at North South University (NSU) on January 12, 2016. However, the formal beginning of the IQAC activities at NSU started with an inception workshop on July 21, 2016. The IQAC is awarded with Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) funding for quality assurance (QA) both at institutional and departmental levels. Even though NSU is always trying to maintain quality of education, establishment of the IQAC assists in centralizing the quality assurance activities at NSU.

Between 2016-18, IQAC has successfully developed Improvement Plans (IPs) for 12 departments for which it has received funding from HEQEP. Initially, IQAC formed a Self-Assessment Committee (SAC) comprising of 3 members each for 12 departments who were responsible for the entire self-assessment process during the project. The IPs were produced after conducting the External Peer Review (EPR) of Self-Assessment (SA) process in those departments. Towards the end of each department’s review, the EPR team handed over a final EPR Report to IQAC on which the SACs further worked on preparing improvement plans for their respective departments.

During this period, IQAC completed trainings for 192 non-academic staffs, 100 academic staffs and 90 graduating students of NSU on various relevant topics. Besides this, IQAC also arranged seminars and workshops for students/faculty/staff on topics like: Towards a disabled friendly campus, National Qualification Framework for Higher Education in Bangladesh, Work-life balance, Mental Wellness and so on. A national level roundtable discussion session was also organized by IQAC, NSU which was well attended by hon’ble Vice-Chancellors, IQAC Directors of other renowned universities and other high officials/ representatives of UGC, BAC, British Council, Pearson (UK) etc.

I am very delighted to state that since January 2019, IQAC has started working as a full-fledged center of North South University. I seek your valuable support and cooperation in this new journey of IQAC. I strongly believe, with your support, IQAC at NSU can become a pioneer in the Higher Education sector of Bangladesh.
