Exploring Japanese Healthcare and Culture: A Summer Exchange Experience at Niigata University School of Medicine
This summer, students from North South University had the privilege of attending a transformative exchange program hosted by Niigata University School of Medicine, one of Japan’s premier institutions known for its cutting-edge medical research and distinguished faculty. The program offered a rare blend of academic immersion and cultural exploration, leaving participants with lasting memories and valuable insights.
Academic Excellence in Virology
Under the mentorship of Dr. Takayuki Abe, head of the Department of Virology, students engaged in hands-on laboratory work and explored emerging research on the neurological impacts of COVID-19. They also had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Mashiko Takahashi and Dr. Taichi Kakihana, who generously shared their expertise and welcomed students into the forefront of virological innovation.
A Global Community of Learners
The program brought together 40 participants from seven countries—China, Indonesia, Japan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, and Russia—creating a vibrant international learning environment. This diversity fostered meaningful cross-cultural friendships and broadened students’ perspectives on global healthcare practices.
Cultural Immersion and Japanese Hospitality
The G-medX team ensured a warm and enriching experience, guiding students through a series of cultural activities that showcased the beauty and traditions of Niigata and beyond:

- 🖌️ Calligraphy & Origami: Hands-on sessions that celebrated artistic expression and precision
- 🏞️ Tsukioka Onsen Trip: A rejuvenating escape into nature, with soothing hot springs and scenic views
- ⛩️ Hakusan Shrine Visit: A peaceful moment of reflection in a sacred space
- 🌊 Sea of Japan Beaches: Leisure and bonding along the picturesque coastline
- 🎆 Shibuya Summer Festival: A lively celebration with fireworks, parades, street food, and music
A Journey to Remember
The ten-day program seamlessly blended academic rigor with cultural richness, offering students a holistic experience of Japan’s healthcare system, traditions, and way of life. As one participant reflected:
